00000 · Ten Thousand Things

Outpouring: 2024 Summer Solstice, Crestone, Colorado.

And here we go! Today is the longest day of the year in 2024, and tomorrow is the full moon. Seems like an auspicious time to launch a giant and crazy project that may or may not be completed, either because I get lazy or incapacitated or dead.

What is this project, this Ten Thousand Things? I’d like to write about or make content about one thing a day, until I have churned through ten thousand things. At the rate of one thing a day, I’ll finish this project on November 6, 2051. I’ll be 83 years, 4 months, and 6 days old. I can’t imagine that future, and that’s exciting.

I love a good hare-brained scheme as much as the next person, and this rabbit hole will be a rabbit warren by the time I’m done. I’ve thought about a project like this for years, and I’ve got it down to a few general guidelines.

  • I want and need to enjoy this.

  • I’d like to do this daily, but may skip some days, or double up, as life goes.

  • Anything, any thing, everything, every thing, is fair game.

  • I want to publish on a schedule that honors the turning of the earth and moon and sun. God’s watch.

  • I want to print shit. My first real job was doing a bit of everything at my hometown newspaper, and there’s nothing like publishing in the real world. The rough plan is a zine every full moon, a newspaper every solstice and equinox, and a book every year. We’ll see how that goes.

  • I want to be simple and honest and direct and vulnerable.

  • The words that keep popping up in my head are: love, explore, create, and rest. I want to fill my nows with those actions.

If you’re reading this, you’ve been exposed to me and this project somehow, and I thank you for your curiosity. My hope is that some thing I am sharing brings something good to you.
